You are so right about the feeling of claustrophobia that can come with the blinds being shut. I love being able to keep mine open without the shock and glare of over-bright sunlight blasting my eyes and slowly damaging my furnishings. :(

Window films are very helpful to prevent harmful UV rays and heat that cause our interiors to crack and fade. It can also help shattered glass hold together in case of an accident.
